For the past two decades MG Properties has specialized in the acquisition, development, rehabilitation and management of apartment communities throughout the western United States. With a commitment to “Enriching Lives Through Better Communities,” we now manage well over 10,000 apartment homes throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington and Oregon, providing thousands of quality living spaces for our residents, excellent returns for our investors, and creating fulfilling career opportunities for our employees and vendors.
This year we are challenging ourselves to live our corporate values more fully by addressing a profound, human challenge in the communities where we work and live… the challenges of foster care children. In any given year, there are 400,000 foster children in the United States. These children find themselves in a system that is too often overwhelmed and heartbreakingly ineffective. For those who remain in the system until they “age out” at age 18, 40% will be homeless within the following 18 months, 25% are incarcerated by age 20, only 46% complete high school, and only 1% graduate from college.
Throughout 2015, 2016 and 2017, MG Properties has committed itself to do all it can to support an extraordinary nonprofit – Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) – that significantly improves the prospects of foster children and is active in all seven regions in the West where we have properties. CASA programs across the country recruit, train, and support volunteers to be court-appointed advocates for what are often the most challenging subset of foster care youth. For many of these children their CASA volunteer is the only constant adult presence in their lives, enabling them to achieve a number of positive outcomes, including permanent placement and greater achievement in their lives.
MG Properties regional offices are prepared to support CASA programs, and the foster kids they serve, in the following ways – where deemed appropriate
By engaging multiple MG Properties constituencies in contributing to CASA through a combination of direct appeals and fundraising events
MG Properties employees organize and volunteer at events held in concert with their local CASA program, and potentially commit to serving as CASA volunteers
By providing workplace internships for foster youth served by CASA volunteers, leveraging job opportunities and skills of MG Properties and its employees
